Just a thanks to all those who responded to my request for 2600 info. The best general tip for such off the wall problems was to look for a Sams book, which do exist for the 2600s and I assume for lots of other beasties. Someone sent me a set of schematics which was all that I really needed in this case. The fix by the way was free. A coil that keeps the video out of the 5v supply had opened.
