[comp.sys.atari.8bit] Using NEC 3550 Printer with P:R Interface

deg@sei.cmu.edu (Donald Griffin) (06/08/91)

I'm the happy(!?) owner of the above letter-quality parallel printer.
My problem? It works well with IBM-compatible PCs, but doesn't
understand my 130XE via a P:R Connection interface.

The P:R works well with a Gemini 10X parallel printer, so I assume
the internal ok/not-ok-to-print logic should work. However, the NEC
printer will randomly print/not print characters, and sometimes print
trash, almost as if it were a serial printer running at the wrong baud
rate!

Has anyone out there used this printer, or perhaps an
Anderson-Jacobson or Diablo daisy-wheel printer? If so I sure could
use some pointers in making it work.

Also, assuming the printer can be made to work, am I right in
expecting that the P:R will take care of any return/linefeed concerns?

Lastly, can anyone share documentation on this beast? It's
supposed to be able to do bold, proportional, pica, elite, and the
rest of those neat formatting things a daisy wheel/thimble/petal
printer can do, and I have NO documentation at all.

    Thanks for your help,

Don
