[comp.sys.m68k] MPulse news

wayne@fmsrl7.UUCP (//ichael R. //ayne) (10/08/87)

Since I only got a few replies on my MPulse newsgroup idea, I
figured that we could use this one until the traffic builds (if it ever
does).

I know that there are a number of MPulse machines out there. Not
too many are on the net though. I have been trying to collect names of
people as I find them. Here is what I have so far. Please help add to
the list.

ksb@j.cc.purdue.edu	Kevin Braunsdorf (Knows of 2 others)
	gdb@ninja.uucp David Butler
	wrecks@jlsoft.uucp	Rex Chadrick
	dutcher@fmsrl7.uucp Bill Dutcher
	freedman@fmsrl7.uucp	Dick Freedman
        kraska@fmsrl7.uucp Marvin Kraska
	wayne@fmsrl7.uucp,
	wayne@teemc.uucp Michael R. Wayne W: (313) 322-3986

	{codas, gatech}!usfvax2!tscs!gerard	Stephen Gerard
	{pyramid, philabs}!fmsrl7!reel!pes	Paul Stutler

We have 4 machines here in the Detroit area (fmsrl7 is NOT an MPulse
though). Mine (teemc.uucp) is the only one that is net-registered. We
have had a number of problems with the machines, many of which have
been fixed. I would like to see a discussion of what problems other
people have had, workarounds, and solutions. I am not including
anything here because I do not know how many people will actually
read/post this subject but I will have much to post if there is any
kind of reasonable response.

I have a friend who uses several Tower machines. I tried a couple
of things and found out that the MPulse 20 running under unixC.4 will
run NCR 600 tower code but will _not_ run NCR 800 tower code. In order
to help you out in determining where code comes from, here is a
new /etc/magic pulled from my system. It incudes some additional info
and does not lose any. I am interested in adding Stride information to
this so if anyone has access to a Stride /etc/magic, please send it
to me. Has anyone found any other manufacturer's code that works?

I just realized that some people may not know what this is for.
If you put the below file into /etc/magic on your machine, you can then
type commands like
	file /bin/cat
to find out what /bin/cat really is. The existing /etc/magic file will
identify LPC compiled things but this one will recognize code from NCR
Tower machines as well.
