[comp.sys.m68k] Searching for the holy grail: The *real* Moto assembler spec.

dillon@cory.Berkeley.EDU (Matt Dillon) (02/05/88)

Request for guidance:

I have a need for the actual Motorola assembler spec. I'm assuming
this is either a prepared document, or the manual to the first assembler
from Motorola. This should outline assembler directives, comment
formats, etc. I need the real stuff, not one of the many variants
on the theme.

Please post any answer, my home machine is very, very sick and will
promptly regurgitate any mail sent near it.

The user guide/reference manual, titled something like "Motorola
Macro Assembler Reference Manual" is probably what you need. The
assembler opcodes, assembler macros, and assembler directives are
adequately described to program and/or clone the assembler.

This document can be purchased from Motorola. Contact a Motorola sales
office and/or the Motorola Literature Distribution Center, in Phoenix.
A sales office should be able to provide you with phone numbers, if not
the document itself.

There are several good books on the market which adequately describe
the Motorola assembler. If you need a few specific references, send me
E-mail. The Moto doc is what you are after, though.

The original Motorola Assembler was for the M6800. I strongly suspect
that what you are referring to is the original M68000 assembler. It
first ran on an IBM mainframe, and then became available running under
Versados on a Motorola EXORmacs system. It was later modified to take
into account the additional instructions that the 68010 provided, and
of course has been since modified to include 68020, 68030, 68881/2
instructions, and so on. The original assembler manual still survives,
under the Motorola part number M68KMASM/D10, The M68000 Family Resident
Structured Assembler Reference Manual (Rev. 10). Make sure that that is
really what you want, because the "Unix System V" assembler is quite
a bit different , since AT&T used a different set of mnemonics for the
68K instructions, and included assembler directives which are also
different. The Unix version manual part number is M68KUNASG/D5,
The System V/68 Assembler User's Guide (Rev 5). Either or both manuals
can be ordered through the Motorola Literature Distribution Center,
P.O. Box 20924, Phoenix, AZ 85036-0924.
