I remember a rumor years back:   When  only the  68000 was available,
Apollo  used  two  68000  chips  to  implement  Virtual  Memory.  One
executed  instructions  immediately  following  the other.   When the
first one ran out of memory, the second would stop and do the context
switching needed for virtual memory.
