Hi, just wondering, are there any other people out there on the net in Australia and N.Z. that have built and are using the Applix 1616. I built one such beasty last year and it's going strong. It would be nice to hear what other people's opinions are about it. For those who have no idea what I'm talking about, the Applix 1616 is a computer kit. It runs a m68000 at approx. 8 MHz, has 512K minimum RAM, a 16 colour graphics system with max. res of 640 x 200. It uses 3.5" 800k disk drives, has 2 serial ports, joystick port, centronics port, lots of AtoD and DtoA ports, and the disk drive card runs its own z80 cpu at 8MHz which can handle CPM, 2 floppy drives, a SCSI hard disk, and 2 more serial ports. Such a system can be built for around $1000 and was a hell of a lot of fun. Not bad if you're into powerful, useful kits. There are already a number of user groups set up for the machine. It has its own 1616 operating system, which isn't bad, and soon we may be looking at Minix and other systems running on it. This was just to let you know of its existance, and to find other people that are using it. Guess what I am typing this letter on?
