We are developing a database filter which provides selection and projection in hardware. In other words, the hardware will execute an SQL statement like "Select A,B,C from FILE where ((D = 'red' and (E < 10 or E > 6)) or A < B)" The internal speed of the filter is about 10 Megabytes per Second. The driver on which the filter is being prototyped is an onboard 68010 for initial setup plus a DMA 68450 for running the data through. The DMA 68450 uses 1 channel for the host computer, 1 channel for an onboard SCSI port, and 2 channels for the filter. Board interface to the VME is being worked on although IBMPC and IBMAT backplane interfaces could easily be built. Is there any interest in this product? Are there any similar products already on the market? What sort of prices do these types of products sell for? I would appreciate any comments on what we are trying to do. Our reason for asking you is that our financial sponser (National Research Council of Canada) is asking us about potential market of the product.
