Line eaters are just beta i/o packages for Gnu ADA. I have a 68k based unix machine running Unix System III. It's an old dusty ONYX. ONYX is now out of business, so off to the net for info! Has anyone seen System V running on this thing? 4.x bsd? MINIX? GNU? I'm looking to upgrade my machine and am willing to port if needed. FYI, It's going to be Yet Another Public Access machine in the Houston area once I can hack up a working kernal. For those of you who are saying, "But NEWS runs on System III, what is the problem?" The problem is that the bloody machine supports at most 80mb of disk storage across 4 20mb drives. Not nearly enough for a serious news machine (in my opinion, anyway). thanks for anyhelp. I really doubt that you have this particular combination of operating system and CPU. ONYX supported many different operating systems. In the UNIX world, it's main product lines were Z8000 based systems running Unix Version 7 and later, System III. It had a 68010-based system that was essentially between beta and production models when the whole product was sold to a company in Mexico City called Micrologica(?). This product ran System V, release 5.0.1, with some Berkeley utilities and many kernel enhancements. > Has anyone seen System V running on this thing? 4.x bsd? > MINIX? GNU? If you have a 68010 machine, you will probably have more luck upgrading to a new and larger disk drive. The Adaptac controller has firmware that can handle Maxtor 1100's. If you have a 80186 machine, you are probably running Xenix. There weren't more than a handful of these, and they never were shipped outside of ONYX. > For those of you who are saying, "But NEWS runs on System III, what > is the problem?" IMI manufactured 5 1/4" hard disk drives, and the majority were in this 20mb range. I think they had a 40mb version as well. Anyway, IMI manufactured 5 1/4" hard disk drives for IBM in IBM's first PC. When IBM didn't renew their contract with IMI, IMI was in serious chee-chee and that's when the ONYX/IMI merge came about. A result of this was that ONYX had a lot of low-capacity drives that were mandated to be in the ONYX product line. > thanks for anyhelp. > > David NEal > {killer!texbell!nuchat or uunet!nuchat}!abbadon > What's that?
