Need some advice on emulators: Very soon me and a co-worker are going to begin debugging a 68020 based board and we need a buy/rent an easy-to-use (but still useful) emulator. We have lots of PC's and Towers and a few Sun's that could serve as a host. If you have any suggestions as to a good development tool I sure would appreciate some suggestions. Thanks, Bob / / / The game is afoot! / -Bob Cooper bcooper@ncrorl.Orlando.NCR.COM

There is a series of articles on emulators in a new magazine called "Embedded Systems Programming" (415/397-1881). Get all three issues. Rob Steele My opinions are borrowed but who knows from where.

I tried to respond via mail, but the postmaster at your site did not know who "cooper" was. Curious, since I got to your site OK. Well anyway... Tektronix offers a line of emulators for the Motorola 68020 that work very well with SUN Workstations. These connect to the SUN via RS-232 or Ethernet. The LAN link of course offers speedy downloads, and very good response time. Also available is a complete C Language development system consisting of language directed editor, cross compiler and source level debugger. Benchmarks for the compiler show significant code size and execution time improvements over the Microtec Research and Greenhills cross compilers. I can send these benchmarks to you if you send me your mailing address. The emulators and software tools are available for VAX/UNIX, VAX/ULTRIX, Tektronix/Unix, and SUN-3/UNIX workstations and computers. No PC compatibility at this time. For further information, contact your local Tektronix sales engineer, Al Shepard in Orlando (tel: 407-277-4723), or contact me directly: Mike Mihalik (503) 629-1690 Tektronix, Inc. Need a recommendation for a 68000 ICE which supports the CMOS version of the 68000. Note, the emulator should be completely transparent (no funny stuff with NMI, etc...). I would strongly recoment the MircroCosm (sp?) unit, they are located in Beaverton, OR and if you want I can get you phone #s etc. One brand to stay away from is made in Washington state, their unit is ok but the company is not. Last time I posted a complaint about them they tried to drag my employer and me to court. Not very good PR on their part. They made the claim that all their customers were happy and I can see why, if expressing dis-satisfaction gets threats of legal action who would dare. Since I know this company monitors this newsgroup and may get some ideas I would like to point out that I am posting this note from my home machine in my second bedroom at 11:30 pm (outside working hours). Maybe next time they will leave my boss out of it as he is over-worked as is. If you want any more details on either of the two comapnies drop me a line and I'll be happy to oblige. -michael -- Michael Galassi | If my opinions happen to be the same as ...!tektronix!percival!nerd | my employer's it is ONLY a coincidence, ...!sun!nosun!percival!nerd | of course coincidences OFTEN DO happen.
