This request is a spin-off from a discussion going on
in net.politics. Does anyone out there have any information
on travel to Nicaragua? Over the years I have run into a
lot of people who knew people [who knew people [who knew
people [...]]] who had been to Nicaragua, but I haven't been
able to track the links down to anyone with first-hand
information. Barring that, I would settle for
addresses/books/magazine articles/etc. with reliable tips.
The questions which most come to mind are (1) how long
will it continue to be safe? (with all the saber-rattling
going on, I'm sure this is anyone's guess) and (2) how does
one find something better to do than just play tourist? Of
particular interest would be tours through reputable organi-
zations which included a work/study component. In other
words, I'm not interested in flying to Managua, checking
into a hotel and sitting around in bars for two weeks among
the other foreigners.
I suppose I should mention that I speak Spanish and
have a bit of experience travelling in Mexico (although not
the kind that would give me excessive confidence about walk-
ing alone into a hot spot on the Honduran border, so,
please, no he-man adventures wanted!). As usual, answer by
mail and I'll post results to the net.
Thanks. -- Prentiss Riddle
