[net.wanted] 50Hz to 60Hz converters

skip@presby.UUCP (skip) (08/31/83)

Is anyone familiar with 50Hz to 60Hz converters. Are they expensive?

Would using one be recommended for taking a personal computer to Europe?

Thanks,

Give me a break! 50-60 Hz converters for a personal computer?
This really shows the maturity of computer technology: someone
can use one without knowing much about electricity or the basic
ideas of how the thing works.

You ain't likely to find a 50-60 Hz converter anywhere for any
reasonable price today which would be possible to carry anywhere
on an airplane unless you don't take any clothes with you. Why?
Because the thing would have to work by totally reprocessing the
electrical energy contained in a 50 Hz sine wave using some kind
of power supply which would then have to power synthesize a 60 Hz
sine wave. Think about it. Your computer is likely to work at
50 Hz but that depends on the adequacy of its power supply. The
50 Hz will not be filtered as well by capacitors but the voltage
regulator chips will probably not care one whit.

I am a bit disgusted by people who don't understand how things they
depend on work.

50 -> 60 Hz converters are bad news. Try to avoid them. Many personal
computers (the IBM PC for one) work equally well at 50 HZ so all you need
is a relatively cheap 220/110 transformer.

Well, Professor Abeles, aren't you being somewhat (like a lot)
heavy-handed (mouthed) to someone who asked a simple question.
As far as I know, it is not a requirement in most Computer Science
courses for people to be expert EE types. Whether or not you
think it was a naive stupid question, it was asked, and as far as
I am concerned, most learning occurs by asking questions and
reading. You could have saved yourself from reading flames and
mail by patiently answering the question.

** Flame on **
And other people are a bit disgusted by that attitude that one can be
disgusted when other people don't know how things work.

Should a secretary need to take EE classes just to use a word-processor and
not disgust you in the process? Give me a break -- while it's useful for people
to know such things, there is no reason for everyone to have to know it.
