[comp.sys.m68k] 680x0 Price/Performance...

pink@JUDY.UH.EDU (06/12/91)

I'm working on a design for a parallel computer using the 68000
as the compute processor on each node. Unfortunately, I don't have
external funding for this project so everything is comming out of
my pocket. Can someone direct me to a good source of 680x0 chips?

I'm looking to purchase 10-16 processors, and don't care whether its
a 68000, 68010, 68020 etc.. What's important is the price/performance
ratio. (I'd rather get at 33MHz 68000 than a 12.5MHz 68020...)

I've checked Jameco and JDR Microdevices-- I'm sure there are better
deals out there.

Thanks!

I don't know the Housto area, but here (near Washington D.C.) there
are frequent hamfests at which dealers in used chips appear with 10MHZ 68000
chips in the $10.00 range (and some 68010' at that price). Other chips are
similar in price savings.

If you don't know where to find a hamfest, look in your yellow pages
for radio dealers who specialize in Ham Radio, and someone there can tell
you. Price to get in is typically $5.00, and you can spend all day walking
around finding components which you didn't remember that you would need for
your project (wirewrap cards - strip off the old wiring yourself and save a
bundle), bypass capacitors, random logic chips, sockets, whatever.

	Good Luck
