[sci.electronics] Magic-Eye Tube

tc@amd.UUCP (Tom Crawford) (07/12/87)

Yesterday or so I saw a message asking about magic-eye tubes. At the time
I didn't think my RCA tube manual had any, but this afternoon I pulled it
out and took a look and sure enough:

6E5	Electron-Ray Tube

Glass type used to indicate the effects of a change in a controlling
voltage. It is used to indicate acccurate radio-receiver tuning. 6-contact
socket. Heater: 6.3V, 0.3A. Typical Operation:

Plate and Target Supply Voltage 200	250	volts
Target Current *@ 3 4	mA
Triode-Plate Current * 0.19 0.24	mA
Triode-Grid Voltage (approx)
For shadow angle of 0 deg -6.5 -8.0	volts
For shadow angle of 90 deg 0 0	volts

*For zero triode-grid voltage
@Subject to wide variations   (hee,hee)

So, you need 6.3V ac or dc at 300mA and 200-250V at 5mA (or so).
You control the shadow angle with an analog input of 0 to -6 or -8 volts.
You ought to be able to buy one at any real good ol' parts store
(acually, you can very likely still buy an RCA tube manual as well). If
you can't find what you need give me a call at (408) 982-6866.

If I wanted to put a real anachronism on a computer, I'd move a pointer
linearly with strings coming out of the front panel.
