[sci.electronics] GDS2 => CIF converter

rww@esl.UUCP (Richard W. Webb) (09/16/87)

We are working on a chip design project and need to convert files from
a GDS2 format (generated by Calma, a GE company) to CIF, a standard
developed by Cal Tech. Any leads or code would be appreciated.

I would like to give you the code but it was so expensive that we
dropped it after switching our VLSI tools to the ELXSI. However I
can give you some possible contacts that may get you started in the
right direction:

	      OCTAL, INCORPORATED
	      450 East Middlefield Rd.
	      Mountain View, CA 94043
	      (415) 962-8080

They had a working version as recently as June 11, 1985.
Also try:

	      NCA CORPORATION
	      388 Oakmead Parkway
	      Synnyvale, CA. 94086
	      (408) 245-7990

The address and phone may be out of date, but they should be able to
help you. If by some chance you can get a copy of the code to a CIF
to/from CALMA GDS2 converter for free, would you please mail it to
me. I hope this helps.........good luck.

If you have Magic, from the Berkeley CAD tools distribution, you can
enter Magic and type (I haven't tried it, but this is the approximate form):

          :calma read oldfile
          :cif write newfile

Much as I admire Magic, it is worth pointing out that this will only work for
a "Manhattan" layout, that is, one which contains only exactly horizontal and
exactly vertical edges (and thus necessarily, only angles which are multiples
of 90 degrees). If your design contains any oblique angles at all, you will
need to find a different solution.
