Some time ago I asked for reccomendations for a high speed (>=4800baud) modem or line driver that would be compatible with a dedicated line that the phone company provided. The leased line had, for distance and logistical reasons, to be a "loaded" or "3002" line, which means it goes thru the phone company switching equipment and has phone co line voltage on it. We searched around quite a lot and ended up settling on the Gandalf 419 LDM (which was the only reccomendation we got for this type of equipment - from Jim Lowe at UWisc). It seems many people in the phone company and the modem business are unfamiliar with this type application. Several modem companies had 'engineers' answering their phones that did not know about it and one - the 'dark cube' company - had a chap who told me, rather forcefully, it couldn't be done! It turns out NEC and Gandalf both make nice units that will run a single 9600 line or mux 2 4800 lines. The Gandalf was 40% cheaper and just worked when it was plugged in. Concise instructions, too. We have one of their TD mux's. Their stuff is impressive, very reasonably priced, and the people I spoke with knew immediately what we were doing.
