[sci.electronics] sumex-stanford.edu

jkwan@cory.Berkeley.EDU (Joe C. Kwan) (02/03/88)

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who responed to my request for help
in getting to sume-stanford.edu....

However, several users of this net have requested that I post the responses
I received.... so, here is a posting of the first response I received.

From: campoly@violet.berkeley.edu (Mr. Science)

You must use ftp to connect to sumex. I think ftp is
available on cory (I can't check since my cory account was cut off
a few months ago). Issue the command:
	ftp sumex-aim.stanford.edu
Note the hypen rather than the dot between sumex and aim. This should
connect you to sumex. (If you get an "unknown host" message, try
using    ftp 10.0.0.56     )

To log in, use the user name 'anonymous' (no quotes) and type in any
password you want. This will log you into sumex. The mac stuff is
in a directory called info-mac. Just do a cd info-mac .
Watch out since sumex is running TOPS-10 operating system so the
file names might look a bit weird.

Don't make the mistake of doing an ls for this directory. It is very
long. Just do an ls 00* . There are a few files which being
(sorry that's begin) with 00 which contain listings of the files
available. Get one of these files. If you don't know how to use
ftp, type help. The only command you will probably need is the
get command. Just type get and the name of the file you want to
transfer. Note that the file names will be in upper case since the
operating system on sumex is not case sensitive. You can just
enter the files names in lower case in the get command.

Greg (who send the above response to me) also included methods for contacting
him in case more help is needed... I'm not posting those methods here 'cuz
I don't know how he feels about letting the whole net know his phone, etc...

Again, thanks to all who responded.

Joe
