[sci.electronics] Has anyone seen my DB23

bryan@mothra.cs.utexas.edu (Bryan Bayerdorffer) (02/16/88)

Several days ago I posted a plea for guidance in locating 23-pin D-
subminiature connectors, one of which I desperately need to make a cable for
my new monitor. Our IMP has been a bit flaky lately, so maybe my article got et.
Anyway, PLEASE send me mail if you know where I can get these connectors!

I hate to respond with half-a**ed info like this, but it may be better than
nothing. Some time ago, I tried interfacing a CONRAC monitor to my Amiga and
found a need for these beasties. I got them from an outfit (Ma/Pa operation,
I think) named "Jim Black <SomethingOrOther>". I believe he orders in
AmigaWorld, possibly in Amazing Computing (how's that for specific?). As I
remember it, the price for the bare connector was $3.00 and backshells were
$1.50 (a bit pricy, if you ask me). Apparently, he is or was making add-on
floppy drives for the Amiga and bought a big batch of these. If I ever find
myself in reach of a keyboard and the right magazine at the same time, I'll
try to post more complete info.

I never read your original posting - but I do know that if you look in
back issues of Amazing Computing I have seen adds for DB-23 connectors.

23 pin is not a standard size in D-subminature connectors (the standard
sizes are 9, 15, 25, and 37 pins). But try 3M Technical Product Information
at 800-792-0137; they may have it as a special order item, even though it
isn't in their catalog. Ask about 8200 series connectors.

They're hard to find. It's a completely non-standard part. I've been looking
for a pair to make an extender for my RGB port. Been to a good half dozen
places and looked in a few parts catalogs. I hear that a local amiga dealer
here in Oregon will sell them for $8-$10 per connector, but I haven't bothered
to check on it. (At least not til payday at that price!) I here that you
might also be able to buy them at a Sony repair center, as they also use
them in monitors. I've heard rumors of places that will sell them in
lots of 50 or 100, but not single units. Try your amiga local amiga repair
center.

When I was fixin stuff at the local Computer store here, I noticed that some
'manufacturers' of DB-23's were just mucking over the insides of a DB-25!! They
hollowed out the side, and reformed the mating surfaces. Worked, though.

Everyone I know just takes a hacksaw to a DB25. Try Radio Shack
and your hardware store and you'll have one ten minutes after
you get home :-).
