[net.wanted] Meaning of net maps wanted

piety@hplabs.UUCP (Bob Piety) (09/09/83)

How can I find out where the various net nodes are? All I have is a list
of mnemonic-type names such as decvax, puree, seismo, etc. Although I can
often guess where they might be, is there a list somewhere that spells it
out? If anyone has such a list, please send it to me or post it here or tell
me where it maight already be posted.

Thanks,
       Bob

Yes...if anyone has a list of locations corresponding to the often cryptic
site names, please post it for the rest of us to see.
                                  Thanks.@

Every month Mark Horton (or maybe his wife Karen) post a
collection of notes that lists for each site:

name, Organization, contact people, location, and some
	other fields.

This information is (usually) accurate for the sites that have sent
mail to Mark and Karen (probably at cbosgd!map; cbosgd!mark will get
to Mark who will then probably send it to the correct bucket).
Sites that have not informed Mark of their existence aren't included
in the listings. Unfortunately many sites that fall
into this category. At uiucdcs, we have routing information
for 1400+ sites and have detailed site information for 795 sites.

Part of the reason for the differences is that the mail routing goes
to more machines than receive news; Mark and Karen are posting a
list for the sites which receive "net.all" (or some specified
subset of the news). Thus some 68000's and such that pick up
mail and not news aren't in the table. And of course their are those that
simply haven't returned the information to Mark and Karen.

Rob Kolstad (parsec!kolstad) has a set of simple programs
that condense these listings, merge them with previously condensed
listings and allows simple searching by site names. The command
"site uiucdcs" gets the entry for the site "uiucdcs". Since the
command looks at sitename prefixes, you grab all University
of Illinois (uiuc) sites by typing: "site uiuc"
