[sci.electronics] Pins on a dumb `ol 7404

craig@unicus.UUCP (Craig D. Hubley) (04/09/88)

OK, this is probably the world's dumbest sci.electronics question *but*:

How are the pins numbered on a 7404 ? I know that 95% of the time they
are numbered, starting to the left of the notch, around the bottom
to the right of the notch. However, I have now vaped three of these
chips (cheap, thankfully) on this assumption, and am beginning to believe
it might be wrong. By the way, how fragile is a 7404 ? Should I count
on replacing it later, due to surges and the like ?
Just putting it in backwards doesn't work, by the way, that's why I'm
asking about it's tolerance. :-)

Email answers, I don't think the whole world is interested.

The 7404 is a hex inverter chip.

There are two different pinouts for the 7404, depending on suffix,
as follows:

		SN7404(J,N) SN7404(W)

		IN	OUT IN	OUT
		 1 2 1 14
		 3 4 3 2
		 5 6 5 6
		 9 8 7 8
		11	10 9 10
		13	12 13 12

VCC pin 14 VCC pin 4
Gnd pin 7 Gnd pin 11

Hope this helps.
