Among my favorite Guitar players are;
John McLaughlin - a brilliant player, who, coming from the
Mahavishnu Orchestra (good, but wierd),
has a strong background in esoteric jazz,
and has brought this to his more mainstream
jazz music. ****1/2
Larry Coryell - Probably one of my favorite guitar players in
the jazz scene. His solo stuff from the
Montreaux Jazz Festival (side two of European
Impressions) is fantastic! *****
Al DiMeola - Becoming a bit too into electric whining, but
if you get some acoustic stuff of his (like the
music on Elegant Gypsy) he can really make the
instrument sing! ****
Earl Klugh - Super mainstream pop stuff, but very good mellow
music (and his first album, Earl Klugh, has some
suprisingly upbeat pieces!) ****
outside of Jazz, the guitar player for the group Yes is very good,
when he gets a chance to REALLY play! The acoustic solo ('Song for Brian'
or something like that) in Yessongs was fantastic! That was the only reason
I saw Yessongs twice. **** (acoustic) * (electric) (for the most part)
Perhaps we should also talk about OTHER instruments...piano,
drums, sax...etcetera. Too many to list right now, though.
