 The X-10 computer interface WILL allow you to control things with
your computer directly. 

By this I mean that you press the right buttons on your computer and
things happen. It might be a cheaper solution for you.

The thing also comes with documentation which will allow you to write
your own contoller program for your computer.

I think the price is around $39.00 box, cable, and software with Docs.

(I don't remember the price because I got mine for $29.95 from a well
known, but often not liked, mail order company.)
