You might check with Dallas Semiconductor on their short range radio
links. I know its not IR, but if you don't find the IR system you want
you can easily put together a non-licensed short range (5-10ft)
radio link w/ the Dallas chips. Seems they were rather cheap and
easily interfaced to uP's.
