[sci.electronics] broken Seagate

s33966r@kaira.HUT.FI (Juha Hulkkonen) (07/21/88)

Hi there,

I happen to have a Seagate ST-4038 hd-drive that doesn't work.
My AT-clone gives error code 1714 'drive not ready' but I suppose that
1714 is a common ec for all kinds of disk errors.
My hd controller (based on Western Digital chips) is ok (I've tested
it with an other drive).

I am very interested in getting my hard disk working again with very
little costs. Does anybody have any kinds of suggestions what to do.
Is it possible to buy hd-drive logic boards as a spare part ?
Should I try to low-level-format my drive (where to get program ?) ?

Please write to comp.sys.ibm.pc or e-mail.

Thanx,

With the price of new drives, I can't see repairing one out of
warantee. This week the going price for ST251 (38ms, 42MB) is $320, and
going down rapidly.

Very rapidly, I just got a ST251-1 (28ms, 42MB) for $259 at Technoland
in Santa Clara, CA.

I had a similar error with a miniscribe hard disk when the disk motor
was not turning the platters at the proper speed. It should have been
at 3600 RPM, but was more like 30 RPM. It's in the shop right now,
so I don't know exactly what's wrong, but you get the idea, I'm sure.

This is very strange. We just called up Technoland in Santa Clara and the
price for an ST251-1 is 459. The $259 price is for an ST125. The 125 is
only a 20Mb half-height drive. Do Amdahl customers get special deals
at Technoland?
