#N:inmet:6600008:000:792 inmet!rgh Jul 30 02:00:00 1983 Here's one to make you feel international: Indian and Japanese musicians teamed up on a German label. "East Greets East -- Ravi Shankar in Japan" (on Deutsche Grammaphon) features sitar, tabla [drums], shakuhachi [bamboo flute], and koto [a large plucked-string instrument] in various combinations. The ensemble piece is an improvisation on "Rokudan", a classic Japanese melody. The other pieces (koto solo, tabla solo, shakuhachi+tabla, sitar+tabla+tambura) are compositions by Shankar, using ragas which resemble traditional Japanese modes. Each of the musicians is a virtuoso, and the various instrumental combinations work quite well. Recording quality is excellent. I recommend this to anyone who has a taste for non-Western music.
