[sci.electronics] full coverage scanner info

NU040889@NDSUVM1.BITNET (Todd M. Bezenek) (10/09/88)

In response to my request for advice in buying a scanner, I received some
very interesting information from Markus Mueller. His letter follows:

>I would recommend you to buy either an AOR AR-2002 (covers 25 - 550 and
>800 - 1300 MHz in AM, FM and FM-wide) or to wait a few more month and then
>buy an AOR AR-3000 (100kHz - 2000MHz AM/FM/FM-wide/SSB). These scanners
>are not cheap (around $ 700 in Switzerland for the 2002; no price yet for
>3000), but they are both *very* sensitive and resistent against large
>signals on nearby bands.
>
>If you cannot get this make within US, or if you do need to have the full
>specified frequency range including Cellular (Warning! ECPA!), write or
>call

Further correspondence with Markus yielded this:

> I also called Poly
>Electronic this afternoon, and yes they do deliver to US.

>However I forgot to mention a few more details about AR-2002:
>a) It has very few birdies; much less than an ordinary scanner. However one
> of the few bad birdies ist at 144.980 MHz, therefore in the middle of the
> 2 m ham bands.
>b) Scanning and searching is slow with only 5 channels / sec. However
> the search step can be varied between 5, 12.5 and 25 kHz so the
> search gets quite fast on UHF.
>c) It has a serial port for computer control; however it is not RS232
> and a level converter (available as an option) is required for true
> RS232 operation. Various additional signals like signal strength and
> squelch are also available on the computer socket at the back.
>d) It has a LED-bar type S-Meter.
