I know that Todd (nebenzene@plains.nodak.edu) has already asked for comments on scanners in general, but I'd like to know if anyone has COMMENTS or knows of ANY REVIEWS of the Bearcat 760 or the ACE/AOR AR2002. I'm really more interested in the 760 since I'm on the brink (within the next few days) of getting one. One of my bosses will probably get himself the AOR in January, so perhaps we'll try to do a comparison review later. Briefly, the 760 has the size and layout of a car stereo, gets VHF lo, hi, aircraft, UHF and the 800 band and costs $245 from Communication Electronics (1-800-USA-SCAN). The AOR usually sells for mid-$400, offers continuous coverage from 25-550 and 800-1300 and is in a larger, but still mobile package. The AOR is imported from Japan (where else >:-()) by ACE communications and I've seen it advertized for $43X from Mil Spec Communications in a recent Monitoring Times. According to their ad, the AR2002 is "the only compact with military UHF and cellular." The 760 has a much faster scan rate and has "service scan" which I presume is an Informant-like preprogramming of public service channels. The AOR sounds like a slightly more sophisticated receiver design, but I like the features and convenience of the 760 better (never thought I'd hear myself make a statement like that). The size and configuration are more important to me than the coverage (the 760 is already all I need), and I like the price. I plan to use the scanner on my desk and in my car. Please e-mail replies; I will forward to Todd or post. Thanks in advance, Jeff C. Internet: chan@ames.arc.nasa.gov UUCP: ames!chan P. S. I have no connections with any of the business above; The opinions are mine alone. (That's the best price I could find; hope it helps.)
