There have been some messages here about how to make flash-lamps do the right thing, but I have not yet seen a reference to what I consider the best book on the subject, written by Harold Edgerton, <<Papa Flash>> himself. %A Harold E. Edgerton %T Electronic Flash, Strobe %I MIT Press %D 1979 %C Cambridge, Massachusetts %X ISBN 0-262-55008-3 %K electronic flash photography stroboscope exposure light measurement A "must have" book if you want to go off the beaten path in work with strobes. Among other things, it has guidelines for how much energy a random tube picked up surplus (well, that's how I get my flashlamps...) can have dumped into it without popping. Techniques for short flash, longer flash, charging, triggering, photometry, exposure calculations. Circuits, ideas for nature photography, bullet photography, list of vendors, patents. Experiments. Original edition 1970, paperback edition with new material in 1979. Following is from my own experience - Vendors (Economy): Radio Shack 4 Watt-sec U-tube #272-1145 B&F, POBox 3357, Peabody, MA, 01961-3357; various tubes with reflectors and lenses, camera-type. Mouser Electronics, 1-800-346-6873, POBox 699, Mansfield, TX, 76063 straight, horseshoe, 1.5 loop; $3.50 - $20.50 Vendors ($$$): EG&G GenRad Most pro-photo suppliers will sell a variety of electronic flash heads that can take up to several thousand Watt-seconds. Manufacturers such as Speedotron, retailers like Spiratone and Calumet. -- |\___/| Ishmael J. Stefanov-Wagner |/. .\| Eaton-Peabody Laboratory \=^=/ {think,harvard,mit-eddie}!eplunix!ijs
