[sci.electronics] YAESU FRG-9600 Mods - Extend Frequency Coverage 100 KHz - 950 MHz

annala@neuro.usc.edu (A J Annala) (12/30/88)

I am considering having a british company modify my Yaesu FRG-9600
(originally designed to monitor 60-905 MHz AM/LSB/USB/NBFM/FM/NTSC)
to extend the continuous coverage range to 100 KHz - 950 MHz. The
firm that has advertised to perform this modification is:

      RAYCOM COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS, LTD.
      International House
      963 Wolverhampton Road
      Oldbury B69 4RJ
      ENGLAND

      Telephone: 011-44-21-544-6767

The modified unit is called a YAESU Mk2/5 receiver. Specifications
claim high receiver sensitivity:

60-950 MHz >1.5 uV for 12 db SINAD (FM)
1.6-60 MHz >2.0 uV for 12 db SINAD (FM)
< 1.6 MHz >6.0 uV for 12 db SINAD (FM)

The modification to extend receiver frequency range is contained
entirely within the existing body of the FRG-9600. Competitors in
American and Japan only provide external frequency converters for
the same extended frequency range coverage. The british price is
149 pounds english plus shipping costs to america...

In any case, I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who
has experienced work performed by RAYCOM and/or the specific Mk2/5
modification they have proposed. Also, I would be interested in
knowing how these specifications stack up against a communications
receiver designed to receive HF only.
