[sci.electronics] Those BSR X-10 controller things.

Now that you mention it, I have never seen the X-10 home controller
applicance modules for less than $15. Even at discount electronics
stores. The Lamp modules are somewhat less, usually around $10, but they
can't take much current.

I've been fooling around with X-10 programs lately, and have written a
simple program to control the X-10 from a command line interface. What's
so special about this, you might ask? Well, this means that I can
control my appliances OVER THE PHONE, using the Bigmouth VoiceMail board.
Bigmouth allows you to run different programs, depending on what touch
tone input you give it. So I could run a batch script like:

X10BAT A 5 OFF
X10BAT A 4 DIM 60
X10BAT C 2 ON
runbigm

This turns module A 5 off, dims module A 4 by 60%, and turns module
C 2 on.

The Bigmouth also has an ALARM input, which allows you to dial a number
(ostensibly, the Police) when the ALARM triggers. I have also noticed a
bunch of new burglar alarm sensors out there, including one for the X10
system. There is also a thermostat controller, and heavy duty modules
for air conditioners and such, as well as a remote control module and
transciever, so you can turn appliances on and off from outside the
house.
