[sci.electronics] existing buses for sensor data?

nivek@rover.ri.cmu.edu (Kevin Dowling) (01/31/89)

What existing buses or network standards exist for attaching diverse
sensors for monitoring or control? Something functionally similar to BitBus
or the proposed standards for residential networks (i.e SmartHouse) might
do the trick.

The essential ingredient is to allow flexibility in appending new nodes
and varying degrees of bandwidth for different sensors. i.e. switches
to cameras. a fixed, time-slotted, time division muxed doesn't
seem to be flexible enough and ties up the network especially as more
nodes are added.

An additional question relates to chip(set)s that allow easy frequency
division muxing. The cable TV that comes into a house has many channels
any one of which can be selected and each of which is running a full-bandwidth
all of the time. Are there simple selectable tuning methods for getting the
signal out?

thanks

How can one find out more about BitBus and SmartHouse?
