[sci.electronics] Interfacing... good references?

I'm working on an computer to real world interface...

Does anyone have good sources for properly interfacing such things as
big relays, sonalerts, and solid state horns to a PIO chip (standard TTL)?

I'm using things like 2N2222's to drive LEDs through long wires, but what's
the BEST way to interface devices like this, and larger current devices
for reliability, etc. Darlington setups to driver relays? I's been a long
time since I did all that...

One last request... Does anyone know of a sound effects chip that is
designed for uProcessor interfacing? I've seen ones that want all sorts of
LC networks hooked up to most pins for different effects, but does anyone
know of one that works off a data bus, instead of all that analog goo??

Thanks for all your support!

Yes... try a General Instrument AY-3-8910.

This produces a wide range of sound, and is programmable via registers.
Should be very available to boot. It's a forty-pin package, and is
intended for direct hookup to a processor.
