[sci.electronics] A/D converter getting hot

Hello. I've been building various digitizing and sampling circuits using
the ADC0820CCN A/D converter. The chip operates fine usually, but then
quite randomly, it stops working and begins to get hot. It all happens
reasonably quickly, it takes ~4 sec to get hot enough to burn my finger,
and if it's left in this state for more than 1 or 2 min. the chip will
(not surprisingly) die. It also occasionally does this immediately after
I apply power. I'm using the chip completely within the rated limits,
in the RD mode. I have a ~50uf capacitor across the power supply to filter
out any transients when it powers up. Has anyone experienced this, or a
similar problem with this chip ??? They cost about $10 each, and I'm getting
tired of replacing them ... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
