[sci.electronics] ACD0820 getting hot

stevel@tybalt.caltech.edu (Steve Ludtke) (02/17/89)

Thank you to everyone who responded to my problem with an ADC0820 that
was heating up. With the advice I recieved I finally found the cause of the
problem. I'm posting the cause in case there are any other poor uneducated
souls out there who might have similar problems. The way I have the chip
connected has several of the i/o lines tied directly to a port on my computer,
with the chip itself powered externally. If any logic signals are going into
the chip when Vcc is applied, the chip goes into a self-destruct mode. What
this means is I simply have to make sure I apply power to the chip before
turning on the computer, and be sure there aren't any interruptions to Vcc
while it's operating. Thanks again for all the advice.
