[sci.electronics] Machine Readable Sat Tv Listings?

rrw@naucse.UUCP (Robert Wier) (03/29/89)

I wonder if anyone out there, probably with a satellite
tv system, is using a machine readable tv listing.

Background: Depending on your area, you may have noticed some
of the satellite tv listing service magazines in stores, such
as Orbit, Satellite TV Week, or others. There is such an
overwhelming amount of programming available on satellite, that
it becomes a really large task to locate specific programs. For
example, I have an interest in about 100 movies which have been
made in the area over the last 50 years, and would greatly like
to know when one is being shown. However, it is very easy to miss
one, being buried in the listings.

Last August, I was investigating a service called SUPERGUIDE, which
consisted of a box which was downloaded with upcoming schedules,
which could then be displayed on-screen. I made some initial
inquires as to whether there might be an RS 232 port or something
that I could use to have my computer look for specific titles
on upcoming programs, but they didn't seem equipped to answer
 such a question.

I'd greatly like to hear from anyone using this or a similar service.

 THANKS!

One of the options available for the Superguide sat TV adapter is
a Centronics-compatible parallel port. It would probably be pretty
easy to attach it to a PC. It was originally the intent of
Superguide to be able to interface it with a personal computer to
be able to print formatted listings.

Pick up a copy of your favorite sat TV magazine and call the people
at Superguide directly for more info. General Instruments is also
working on something called Videopal that is supposed to hook into
your data output of a Videocipher. I don't think Videopal has gone
beyond the concept stage yet. Videopal is supposed to hook up to
personal computers too.

If you find out anything, please post the results.

I don't know how many times I've spent a hour or so searching
Sat. TV Week looking for a specific show/feed.

I wouldn't at all mind spending a couple of bucks on an on-line
service that could do this type of lookup.
