AHA! I have discovered the mechanism by which my trusty old Technics RSM-22 manual, non-solenoid, hard-touch vertical play cassette tape deck has been eating tapes. Not the garden variety way to eat tapes either, but a more subtle way: as the tape traverses the head and pinch roller path, it somehow is drawn laterally as it plays, eventually causing the tape to drift beyond the interface of the capstan and pinch roller into free space. The result: a 2 to 3 inch segment of tape with pretty wrinkles and folds in it. It is also quite useless. I can still obtain parts for this style deck, which is good news since I own two of them. If anybody has any suggestions at all, please post them. Hopefully, the cure is nothing more than replacing the pinch roller, but I leave that to the technically savvy audiophiles on the net. Thanx now for later. p.s. followups go to rec.audio -- Bote uunet!cyclops!csense!bote {mimsy,sundc}!{prometheus,hqda-ai}!media!cyclops!csense!bote
