[sci.electronics] Sick Scope

killoran@umvlsi.ECS.UMASS.EDU (Mik I Killoran) (05/22/89)

Hello!

I have recently received a Tektroniks scope that doesn't work.
There is no horizontal scan. A dot will appear in the middle of the
screen, but will not trace left to right. If a voltage is applied, the
dot will jump the correct amount, so this is why I suspect the scanning
area. After looking around, I discovered a blown fuse, and a cracked
resistor. Replacing both the resistor and the fuse resulted in another
set of dead components. After more looking around, I have found another
cooked resistor, but this one is so discolored that the original value
is uncertain. I am leary about going farther without a set of
schematics for this scope. (This was a gift-No schematics-Doesn't work)

Where can I find a set of schematics for this? I don't know how
old it is but it is model # 5103N and ser # B021944. Any advice would
be very welcome!

Try your local Tektronics sales office. They should be listed in your
local phone book. I was in need of a replacement power transformer
for my personal Tek scope a couple years ago, and they were really
super about sending it and billing me for it (I didn't expect that
when I didn't have a company name to give them). They're good folks.
(I trust they'd support my employer similarly ;-)

Or, you could try Factory Service, (503) 642-8600 in Beaverton, Or.

I talked with Dave Phillips, who will be glad to help you. The
model number 5103 is rather generic, what he needs is the "D"
number from the display unit.

Are you sure your horizontal plug in is OK?

I suggest you call Dave while you have the unit in front of you,
that way you can look up model numbers, etc.

1> Call your local electronic distributor (not Radio Shack) and ask them if
they carry Sam's Photfacts. Sam's will probably have a set of schematics for
your scope.

2> Call Tektronics and ask them to send you a schematic. Sorry, I don't have
their number handy, but you can call 1-800-555-1212 and ask the 1-800 operator
for their number.... wait a sec, I will do it for ya...

               The number is... 1-800-835-9433

Good luck.

Mea culpa. Egad, how could I have. Please excuse me, George, and any
other offended Tektronix folk. No :-). I have often thought how
crass folk were for making that mistake in their postings -- and now
I did it myself.

In any event, however you spell it, they are good folk. I'm confident
that they will take care of your support problems.
