[sci.electronics] 12V DC Power Supply

hardi@blake.acs.washington.edu (Hardi Sutjipto) (07/09/89)

I was thinking to design a DC power supply with 12V DC, 20 Amp,
and very smooth DC output, without having a stepdown AC transformer.

Transformer for 20 amp is usually big in size, inconvenient,
heavy, hard to find, and expensive.

Any comments, suggestions will be appreciated.
	Thanks.

You can buy the same at even higher currents through amateur radio
related vendors. They are used to supply high current DC (13.6 volts,
simulating a car battery). Check QST and 73 magazines for their
advertisements. If you don't have any luck, e-mail me and I will
look them up at home.

I got tired of not having enough 12v (actually, 13.5v like in a car) on
my workbench to test my ham radios with, so I got three of those 5v
high-current switching supplies and wired them in series, then turned
each one down to 4.5v with the adjustment pot. Presto! 13.5V at 150A.
