I have tried drilling holes in a few VHS tapes. What I found was that in
SP mode, they worked great; I couldn't tell the difference between the drilled
tapes and a true S-VHS tape. When I switched to EP, however, there was
definitely a difference: the drilled tapes produced a VERY noisy picture,
full of little horizontal line segments. They were extremely distracting.
Since most of my S-VHS recording is in EP mode (I don't get good enough
reception for SP to do me much good, and besides I'd spend a fortune on
tapes with all the programs I archive) I'm continuing to buy S-VHS tapes.
