[sci.electronics] Service from Jameco Electronics

erf@blake.acs.washington.edu (John Firestone) (08/08/89)

I have been buying parts from Jameco Electronics for over ten years
and always thought they gave outstanding service. Lately, I am not so
sure. In my last two orders they managed to:

     - enter and ship a line item twice
     - enter a line item as shipped but not send it
     - send defective merchandise
     - send incomplete merchandise
     - send the wrong merchandise.

I have had lots of time, so dealing with this has been no great hassle.
However, I am curious what other people's recent experiences have been.

I, too, have had problems with Jameco recently. I ordered an AT i/o
board from them and asked that it be shipped overnight. Two days
later when it hadn't arrived I called. They said they had no record
of the order, that they would track it down, and that they would
reship if, and only if, they were sure the first one hadn't gone out.
In the mean time we discovered that they had shipped the first one,
but had neglected to put anybody's name anywhere on or in the package
so the receiving dept. here didn't know who to contact. I called
Jameco back and told them what happened and they assured me it
wouldn't happen again. The next day the second (reshipped) board
arrived with nobody's name in evidence. I called them again, and told
them I very unhappy and would be sending the (mistakenly reshipped)
board back. After two months I still have not received a refund.

I don't know if I'd accuse them of malice, just gross incompetence.

I've also had problem w/ Jameco's service lately; mainly in the form of
missing/added parts. However, this has only happened when I've called their
message service to place an order(which runs 24 hrs); never when I my order
was taken from an operator at Jameco...

Jameco service use to be great. Nowdays, they are going for the fast-buck.
They are trimming down their IC stock, and apparently have hired an outside
company to take phone orders for them.

I have had items substituted for similar, but not identical items.
I have been billed for much higher amounts than their catalog lists.
I have been repeatedly hung-up on by their service department who can't
figure out how to use the "hold" feature of their phones.
I have been given a terrible run-around whenever they made mistakes on
	my order.

If anyone has an alternative to Jameco for electronic supplies and parts,
please let me know.

DigiKey puts out a nice catalog, all sorts of components. I've never ordered
from them, but it seems like they'd have most of the junk I'd ever need.

I don't know how good their service is.

I have ordered from DigiKey over the years, and found their
service very professional, prompt, and correct. They don't
always have the latest chip in inventory, but what the do stock
        is of high quality.

I've been ordering electronic parts for several chem labs (electrochemistry
and spectroscopy research sometimes tends more toward gadgets than chemicals:-))
for many years now. Many of our orders go to Digi-Key: they've been
for the most part, professional, always got the orders that I've
mumbled in right (telephone orders, each usually much more than a dozen items,
poor operator :-)) and
we've received it in good time (and if we specify rush and pay the
extra $ for Fed express, it comes in a day or two) and the prices are
definitely right. Of the hundreds of items (thousands if you include
resistors :-)) that we've got from them, we've never received a bad part.

I haven't ordered from Jameco that often, but the last time (just this
past week) I had similar experiences. My friend who has been a dedicated
Jameco purchaser for quite some time turned me on to them as a good
company. This past time my order had items substituted (that looked like
the right item) ... (ie. a 24-pin machined IC socket instead of a 20-pin
one) ...

My friend, Gil Kloepfer, Jr. (gil@limbic) ordered also a couple of weeks ago,
and his order (which was FAXed in) was clearly marked 2nd day UPS, but
they shipped it Ground UPS (he was charged appropriately, but he wanted
the order quickly, and it took >7 days to arrive via ground). He also
had items like a 40-pin DIL connector where it should have been a 34-pin
one. Quite annoying!

One of my customers from my consulting days uses DigiKey heavily, and
has nothing but praise for their service, save this one caveat:

Be sure you get the order right. If you hang up, then realize you made
a mistake, it will do you no good to call right back: The order-entry
operator has a computer terminal on desk, and the order is often boxed
by the time you can reconnect. (May be an excuse, but with service as
fast as theirs, who cares? B-) )

Of course, this means you sometimes have to send something back, or place
a second small order, but he had no complaints about their followup.

I have had such bad service from Jameco that I can assure you it is not
only their mail order department that has a problem. I usually go to the
will call desk.

On my last order (two years ago, haven't gone to them since) they
substituted an 8052-AH chip for an 8052-AH-BASIC chip (which has Basic in
ROM, the other doesn't) then refused to take it back because they said
"it's the same chip."  They gave me a 6802 when I'd asked for a 6803;
etc. etc. Frankly, they don't seem to be able to do anything right.

This is very interesting!! I have just the opposite opinion of Jameco.
I have ordered $2000 + of parts from them over the past 4 years, and
have had only 2 (minor) screwups. First, they sent me a 4.91 MHz. xtal
in place of a 4.19 MHz xtal (that was almost asking for trouble!!), and
once they sent me a disk drive enclosure by mistake. They replaced the
xtal very quickly by UPS and refunded $$ for the drive case and shipping.

Not to be funny, but do you speak clearly when you order the stuff??
