A friend of mine heard that solar flare activity can affect local magnetic declination by as much as +/- 5 degrees over a period of a few days. We are curious about this, because those of us who survey caves frequently rely on magnetic instruments, rather than more accurate but much harder to use transits or theodolites. Does anyone out there KNOW anything about this? (Conjecture is fine, but please label it clearly.)
