[sci.electronics] Broken VCR. help!

sparks@corpane.UUCP (John Sparks) (10/10/89)

I have an NEC (now what *is* that mondel number? something like NX1000 I think)
VHS-HQ VCR. It worked fine yesterday, no problem. perfect picture.

But today...
all of a sudden the top 1/4 of the screen is just static on playback. The rest
of the screen seems normal enough, with the exception of some added jitter.

It only happens when playing tapes, Any tape. The tuner section works fine. I
could still use it to view TV.

Heres what I tried to no avail:

1. cleaning the heads
2. adjusting all controls, including tracking :-)
3. checked all connections.
4. removed all power for a while.
5. took VCR apart and checked for loose connections on the circuit board, head,
looked for scratches on the head, etc.
6. Hit the durn thing on the side while playing to see if there was something
loose ;-)

Results: same problem, tape head looks clean and unblemished, no loose wires
that I could find.

I have been messing with electronics for about 8 years, but never with VCR's so
I am pretty much lost. But not afraid to get my hands dirty. So...

If someone out there has some idea what is causing the problem, how about
letting me in on it so I can whip out my trusty soldering iron and fix the
durn thing. I'm gonna go buy a Sams schematic for it today.

If we weren't supposed to juggle, tennis balls wouldn't come three to a can.
