Can anyone explain to me how the analyzer pass energy in the ESCA system controls the resolution ? It seems to me that if the the number of electrons liberated as a function of the binding energy is Gaussian, so is the kinetic energy of the liberated electrons, and I do not understand how a retarding potential applied to the analyzer is able to increase the resolution for electrons of different kinetic energies. Please e-mail responses; and thanks in advance. Regards, Karthik
