[sci.electronics] Hooking up EGA to a VGA monitor

tzchiu@dasys1.UUCP (Timothy Z. Chiu) (10/26/89)

I'm interested in finding out if it is possible to hook up a VGA
monitor to an EGA card. Has anybody tried this? Does it work?
I've seen ads in computer magazines for cables that have VGA
connectors on one end and DB9's on the other. Can these be used?

Will it harm the monitor or the card to do this hookup? I'm interested
in doing this because I already have an EGA card, but it seems I can
get a VGA monitor a lot more cheaply than I can an EGA monitor.

Any help would be appreciated. I apologize for the broad posting,
but I don't read any of these groups regularly. A quick reply
would be appreciated as my mono monitor is slowly but surely dying
a painful death. Please e-mail all replies. If there is interest
I will post a followup to comp.sys.ibm.pc.

Thanks again!

In general, no. Unless your "VGA" monitor is actually a "multisync"
variety, or has an unusually wide range of sync frequencies over which it
will "lock in", this will not work. The EGA and VGA timings are NOT
compatible.
