[sci.electronics] PC color graphics standards

toddpw@tybalt.caltech.edu (Todd P. Whitesel) (11/23/89)

I have access to some number of disused monitors and have been wondering
just what are the different color/mono standards on the PC and what pinouts
and timing do they use?

Since I am trying to hook up these monitors to other computers and to custom
display boards (mine) the monitor connector is most of what I'm interested
in, but a good summary of official standards would be nice.

I posted here because it is the hardware signals that I am interested in
primarily, since I don't have a PC and don't plan to buy one. But when I see
an RGB sitting around that the CS Department says I can have if I clear it
with people, ... you get the picture.

Specific Info:
Common standards like CGA, EGA, VGA (not sure which I can get but I
like to be informed when I'm poking around)
The 5272 color display for the IBM 3270 (not the actual terminal, I
have a monitor all by itself. The Maintenance Manual is not very complete
about the video pinout, and if anyone has the official spec on the sync/timing
and especially color (which of these is analog R/G/B and which is TTL?) it
would be nice and rest my conscience somewhat, as well as prevent unhappy
accidents-- I don't want to poke around and risk frying these things, I smoked
enough free junk last year.

Thanks in advance!
