Recently, a co-worker and I built a voltage controlled current amp to drive a set of huge coils which had about the same characteristics as speaker coils. So, we thought, what the heck? I brought in a 15" woofer and ran some tests. The current amplifier worked very well, even at the free-air resonant frequency of the woofer. It seems to me that since the magnetic field of the coils is proportional to the current passing through them, a current amplifier will control the cone much more accurately than a voltage amplifier would. Has anyone else done or know of experiments in this area? There is an article on it in the latest JAES, but I think it's kinda hokey. Also, has there ever been an current amplifier on the market? I don't think there are any today.
