[sci.electronics] Looking for IR detection equip

jmasters@pcocd2.intel.com (Justin Masters ~) (12/23/89)

I am looking for some kind of plans, kits, etc for building/buying some kind
of infrared detection kit so that I can see infrared light. I play laser tag
with a bunch of guys, and would like to be able to follow the beams, etc.
Maybe heat detection would be neat too...then I can see bodies in the dark
(that's the only way to play LT). Also, we don't get surprised by the
Sheriffs. We've been snuck up on by them a few times. Not that we're doing
anything bad, it's just that I don't want to get shot at by a trigger happy
guy out on a disturbance call that someone else caused. It's happened, and
thankfully they had been in hiding watching us for some time to determine it
was not us making any noise. We only got warnings to stay away from peoples
houses (which we never got close to in the first place). We have now been
trying to run off people who make lots of noise and disturb the neighbors, so
that we don't get chewed/chased out for something we didn't do.

You won't be able to actually see the beams. The best thing is to get
an IR visor to see body heat with. The problem is finding a small one
that you can actually afford.

Are you talking about something like the army uses (night-scopes)? If so,
how much money do you wish to spend? Those things are EXPENSIVE! The
Sheriff's dept. has an IR viewer they use at night from their helecopter.
Are you talking about something like goggles? Or an actual CRT?

Once again I consult my surplus catalog (though this looks like new stuff
that they're selling...). There's too much to quote, but I'll give you a
brief run down:
  * for $20 you get the instruction manual for the $350 kit
  * for $159 you get a "long range IR source"
  * for $350 you get an IR binocular "kit"
  * for $450 you get another IR viewer (different model)
  * for $850 you get a "long range IR viewer"
I'll post/mail more info if you're interested.

Incidentally, as long as I'm on the subject of surplus stores again,
the catalog I have here advertises a laser power supply for $80.
Again, I'll post/mail more info upon request.

Adam: can you post the address of this place? I'm interested in lasers.

Thanks.
