I've posted an inquiry into this subject before, but I didn't get any practical solutions. I want my alarm clock to turn on my TV instead of a radio. So, I want to redirect the turn-on voltage to a circuit that will pulse an LED with the correct data stream. The obvious solution is to get the IC from inside the TV's remote transmitter and toggle it. But that IC is no longer available. So, I need to duplicate the turn-on sequence of that IC. Fortunately, I have the data sheet for the IC. Unfortunately, it isn't clear what the bit-for-bit stream is for each function. I've tried beaming the transmitter into a photo detector and studying the waveform on a scope: pretty jumbled. Still, it looks like deciphering the transmitter output is my best option. Any suggestions? Jerry Willard, Tektronix jerryw@teksce.SCE.TEK.COM

Why not use an air-conditioner timer to turn on the TV (I assume you want to be woken up by it, correct?), since there's a lot of current draw in a TV, that's why the aircon timer. I use a smaller one to turn on a lamp for me in the morning (since I'm a heavy sleeper), after the radio comes on. See the February 1987 Byte and the March-April 88 Circuit Cellar Ink. These have the writeup in a universal remote control that Steve Ciarcia and company did. All you ever wanted to know about how to read and memorize a remote control's data transmission. markz@ssc.uucp
