[sci.electronics] Fluorescent Problems

a752@mindlink.UUCP (Bruce Dunn) (04/08/90)

Aside from operation in the cold, one of the main problems people are
having with fluorescent lights is spelling their name (no flame intended - I am
amused, not annoyed).

     Correct: fluorescent (includes term fluor)

     Incorrect: flourescent (includes term flour)

     Incorrect: florescent (includes term flor)

Fluorescent tubes are internally coated with chemicals called fluors which
glow when struck by ultraviolet light generated by the mercury vapor in the
tube. Flour is what you make bread out of. Flor refers to flowers, and
florescence is a "state or period of flourishing (or blooming)".

The substitution of flour for fluor seems to be invisible to many people.
If you do this, don't feel bad. Try looking up the element fluorine in the
short descriptions of the elements in the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and
Physics. Unless they have changed it recently, it is listed as "flourine"!

Wow! Where can I get one of these lights for breadmaking? I'd like the
Cool Wheat color :-)
