> Has anyone out there ever built (or seen plans) for a simple >bar code reader, i'm looking to build one to interface to either a PC >then possibly to a micro controller. I'm posting this for a friend who does not have a USENET feed. -------------------------------------------------------------- I have built a Bar Code reader, and found it a very simple, and successful project. Hewlett Packard makes both the Bar Code wand, and an integrated circuit to do the job. Contact your local HP rep and obtain their opto-electronics cataloge, or contact a local distributor that carries the HP line. You can start by calling the main HP number at 1-800-752-0900, and asking for a local sales office. I used the HEDS-3050 digital bar code wand, (about $100.00 single quan) and the HBCR-2000 multi-purpose bar code decoder I.C. (about $50). The I.C. is really an Intel 8051 rom programed microcontroller with Hewlett Packard's routines for scanning bar codes. Make sure you request the Data Sheet with your purchase of the I.C., the data book pages do not contain enough information. You will have to wire wrap about 4 more I.C.'s and about a dozen discreet components to make thing's work. To get an RS-232 output you will have to provide drivers and voltages to do the job, try drivers from MAXIM, or standard motorola MC1488 with +- 9 volts. My project worked and I was amazed at all the bar codes that it could read, I went crazy taking cans and box's with UPC codes, and scanning them. The darn thing worked.
