[sci.electronics] rf hybrid tee

magnet@ac.dal.ca (06/29/90)

A "hybrid tee", also known as a "180-degree hybrid", or as a "magic tee"
(especially in the microwave regime), is a 4-port device which provides two
equal-amplitude in-phase signals when fed from its sum port, and two equal-
amplitude out-of-phase signals when fed from its difference port. Assuming
ports are properly terminated, opposite ports of the hybrid are isolated.

I'm interested in any references anyone out there can give me on the
principles of operation of such devices in the _RF_ regime (as opposed to
microwaves, where virtually every book on the subject discusses them).
Ideally, the reference would consider such a device when the ports were
"improperly" terminated (i.e. mismatched).

Thanks for any such pointers...
Stephen.
